Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has announced stringent measures against hate speech, xenophobia, tribalism, and stigmatization in the country. In a press release signed on Tuesday, May 22, 2023, Minister Atanga Nji emphasized that individuals engaging in hate speech, as well as media outlets propagating xenophobic messages, will face severe consequences under the laws of the Republic. The minister further declared that those using social media to spread hate speech, violence, and tribalism will also be held accountable.
Addressing the prevalent rise of hate speech, xenophobia, tribalism, and stigmatization targeting specific ethnic groups within society, Minister Atanga Nji condemned the divisive agenda behind such behavior. He affirmed that fostering ethnic divisions among Cameroonians will not succeed and pledged the government’s commitment to combating these harmful acts.
Sanctions to be Imposed Across Media Platforms.
In a collaborative effort, the Minister of Communication, the Minister of Territorial Administration, and the President of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism organized a joint press conference to raise awareness about the dangers posed by hate speech. They reiterated the government’s determination to enforce existing laws against those who employ hate speech in the country.
Effective immediately, any individual found guilty of hate speech or any media outlet used as a conduit for xenophobic messages will face appropriate punishment in accordance with the Republic’s legal framework. The same applies to those who utilize social media platforms to propagate hate speech, violence, and tribalism. The government intends to hold not only the offenders but also accomplices and facilitators of these offenses equally accountable.
