32 fighters from the Anglophone separatist movement in the Ndian Division have made the courageous decision to surrender their weapons. The event took place on Saturday, June 10, 2023, when a group of young individuals who were once aligned with the separatist movements made the pivotal choice to renounce violence and embrace peace. This surrender comes just a few weeks after two self-proclaimed “generals” of the separatist movement and 16 of their fighters also laid down their arms in the same area. Together, these acts of surrender by former combatants demonstrate a growing willingness among certain factions to seek peaceful resolutions and contribute to the long-awaited stability in the affected regions.
A Step Towards Reconciliation and Stability.

Upon surrendering, the former combatants were warmly received by the country’s defense and security forces in Mundemba. They will now be transported to the Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) center in Buea, where they will undergo a process of disarmament and receive support for their reintegration into society.
Local officials, including Sake Esono Louis Besinga, the deputy mayor of Mundemba municipality, have expressed their optimism about the progress made. Mr. Besinga confirmed the successful surrender of 32 individuals within a month, emphasizing the positive impact of initiatives aimed at persuading fighters to lay down their arms and embrace peace.
“This is a great news for us.12 of them surrendered this day,bringing to a total 32 fighters who have laid down their weapons within a month” he said.
As Cameroon moves forward, the surrendered combatants will be provided with assistance and opportunities to reintegrate into their communities.
