The President of Senegal Macky Sall has on twitter, consoled mothers and families following a fire outbreak which occurred Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabah hospital in Tivaoune, caused by a short circuit killing 11 new born babies in the neo-natal ward on the spot.
“ I have learnt with Pain and Consternation the death of 11 new born babies in the fire that occurred in the neonatology department of the Mame Abdou Aziz Dabah hospitalin Tivaoune he twitted”
“To their mothers and families, I express my deepest sympathy; he added”
Three babies were however saved, and health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr who was in Geneva attending a meeting with the world Health Organization is said to have returned immediately.
Note that this is not the first time such incident is occurring in that country. In the month of April, an electrical malfunction in an air condition unit in the maternity ward killed 4 newborn babies.
The population of Senegal have called on authorities to put in place measures that will go a long way to improve on the health conditions of new born babies and pregnant women. Daily, several pregnant women die due to negligence, latest been that of a pregnant lady Astou Sokhna who died shortly after arriving the hospital because the staff had refused to accommodate her request for a C- Section.This caused a wave of outrage on the dire state of Senegal’s public health.
