Professor Joseph Kamgno Founding Director of the Centre for Research on Filariasis and other tropical diseases has received congratulatory messages from the Head of State, as he emerged winner of the Christophe-Merieux Prize for 2022.
Speaking in an interview, he said the prize is thanks to the research he carried out on Filariasis.
“We received the prize because of our work on Infectious diseases. For 30 years we have been working on filariasis and onchocerciasis. We have done the mapping of this filaria in Cameroon in areas where we have a filaria called Loai Loai. Some severe adverse effects were developed in patience and we were able to demonstrate that these was due to another filariasis called Loai Loai transmitted he added.”
“We were able to develop the way of treating these diseases, and a way of preventing it. It is possible to envisage the elimination on onchocerciasis from Cameroon and Africa, we have received the greatest recognition in Cameroon, that is a letter of congratulations from the Head of State.
Professor Joseph Kamgno later on presented the Prize to the Prime Minister Head of Government who hailed his efforts in developing research in Cameroon.
Who is Joseph Kamgno?
He is the Founding director of the center for research on filariasis and other tropical diseases. He teaches epidemiology at the faculty of medicines and biomedical sciences at the university of Yaoundé 1 where he is Head of Department of Public Health. He was awarded in 2015 the Islamic Development Bank Price for Sciences and Technology in recognition of his contribution at the socio-economic development of his country.
